If you can imagine the sound of the blues, spiced by flavours of the American songbook, folk, country, and even the rock and roll of Jerry Lee Lewis, driven by the unmistakable sound of boogie woogie piano - then you have the Raven Mavens Quartette. Oh, and did I say these wonderfully diverse and skilled performers all happen to be women?
It is both an accident and it isn’t that this is an all-female group. The group had its genesis almost a decade ago when piano player and singer songwriter Cindy Muggeridge encountered the singing and clarinet skills of Marian Carter. They formed the Raven Mavens as a duo that included a core of folk and blues, and exploited the singing talents of the pair through finely crafted harmonies.
The success of their combination in playing local gigs and folk festivals opened up opportunities with other musicians, and the next step was the inclusion of drummer Anje Glindemann who has played in a list of local bands, including Tin Pan Alley, Hen Picked and more recently the Salty Hearts. Anje can also be seen performing with Kapiti coast singer-songwriter icon Andrew London.

And finally, the addition of multi-instrumentalist Kate Marshall, who is regularly heard with acoustic blues wizard Bob Cooper-Grundy. “Kate is an amazing player”, Cindy says. “She can move as easily from piano accordion, to fiddle or flute, depending on what the song calls for - or she feels like playing!” And of course, like the other members of the group, she sings.
The instrumental diversity of the line-up was now established, but what also distinguishes this group is the addition of Cindy Muggeridge’s original songs to the set. “Writing my own songs has been part of the musical journey for me”, says Cindy, “and it just led naturally to offering some of them to the other singers in the group”.
The “fun” of their music and the unmistakable presence of four female musical masters is what they will be sharing when they play at Studio 73. Entry $20 on the door includes tea, coffee and snacks Welcome to BYO. Bookings by txt to Janette Wallace Gedge 02102361951
