Sculpture in Central Otago offers the unique opportunity to view and purchase quality New Zealand sculpture in the beautiful surroundings of the majestic Otago landscape. Responding to the strength and vitality of New Zealand’s sculptural practice, Sculpture in Central Otago is a premiere outdoor art event located in the rapidly growing Central Otago region.

Now a major annual event, Sculpture in Central Otago was born from a love of sculpture shared by Norma Dutton and Peter Gregg (directors of leading Christchurch gallery, The Arthouse) and the directors of Olssen’s Garden Vineyard (Bannockburn), Heather Macpherson and John Olssen. Having developed a speciality in the exhibition and sale of contemporary sculpture, Dutton and Gregg welcomed the opportunity to present large-scale works within the extensive, varied and attractive grounds of the vineyard.

First held in October 2004, Sculpture in Central Otago is held on Labour Weekend each year and is a popular and much-anticipated event on the South Island cultural calendar. The show has developed a national focus, attracting leading sculptors from throughout New Zealand. Regular exhibitors include Graham Bennett, Bing Dawe, Hannah Kidd, Grant Palliser, Rebecca Rose, Dan Rutherford and Llew Summers with overseas guest artist Robert Hague.

Consistently well-attended, Sculpture in Central Otago continues to grow in both visitor numbers and the amount and range of works presented. While celebrating the stunning Central Otago landscape and the talent and diversity of sculptors, Sculpture in Central Otago also contributes to the local community, making a financial donation each year to community projects. Dutton and Gregg hope to further this community connection by permanently locating sculptural pieces within the Central Otago region, further nurturing the enjoyment of sculpture evident among the local population.

Sculpture in Central Otago will be opened with a Gala Function on Saturday, 20 October 2007 and will continue throughout Labour Weekend at Olssen’s Garden Vineyard, 306 Felton Road, Bannockburn, Central Otago.
