Papakura Radio Club celebrates a long service record in providing communications for search and rescue, Civil Defence and sporting bodies like the Rally New Zealand, South Auckland Car Club and other like associations.

Established in 1960, the club met monthly in premises in O’Shannessey Street Papakura and during the late 1960’s built and moved into our own clubrooms in Wood Street, Papakura. In 1998 the club again moved to our present premises in Wellington Park, 1 Great South Road, Papakura.

In celebrating this achievement, we are planning a display of Amateur Radio activities that ‘Hams’ enjoy. During the April School holidays on Wednesday the 23rd April, we are opening our clubrooms to the public from 5.00pm.

There will be displays of many of the activities we enjoy in our Amateur Radio hobby. These include communicating with friends from across town, around the world and even talking to astronauts onboard the Space Shuttle or on the International Space Station.

There are digital modes of communications where computers are linked into your radio, and there are VOIP communications where we can use radios and or computers for communications. For those with a technical mind, there are projects where we build equipment utilising microprocessors and radios.

We will have a display of the New Zealand designed and built KiwiSAT satellite. A labour of love for local hams, KiwiSAT is now nearing completion.

There will be two radio stations operating on the day and you are welcome to join in and get a feel for the hobby.

Members of the public are invited to join members of the Papakura Radio Club in our celebrations on Wednesday 23rd April from 5pm to 8pm at Wellington Park, 1 Great South Road, Papakura. More on the promotion can be seen at
