Hawera Repertory’s opening play for 2008 is “the Scottish Play”. Macbeth is among the most well known of William Shakespeare's plays, as well as his shortest tragedy. It is an archetypal tale of the dangers of the lust for power and betrayal of friends - A triumph of the evil that is frighteningly present in all of us.

The good in Macbeth cries out through his feverish imagination, but his ambition, the influence of Lady Macbeth and the instigation of supernatural powers all combine to crush his better nature. By the end of the play Macbeth has collapsed beneath the weight of his evil, and the desperate tyrant is so isolated from society and his own moral sensibility, that for him life seems like “… a tale, told by an idiot, full of sound and fury signifying nothing …”

Director Clive Cullen has used the original Shakespeare script, with some cuts and editing, but brings the production setting into contemporary times.
