For the fourth consecutive year, Top Dog Theatre brings Open Air Shakespeare to Mona Vale Gardens, in Christchurch. For 2008, Top Dog Theatre has chosen one of Shakespeare's best comedies, with fun for all the family to sit back and enjoy, The Merry Wives of Windsor.

Queen Elizabeth enjoyed the character Falstaff so much in Henry IV, that she commissioned Shakespeare to write a comedy and love story revolved around him. This Shakespeare did, to the Queen's great delight, and it remains as one of the most easily understood and enjoyable of his many plays.

Almost from the opening scene, the infamous Falstaff reveals how he as written love letters to two wives in the village. His sole aim is to lure them into his grasp, and ultimately, of relieving them of as much money as he can.

The scoundrel is discovered by our merry wives, who set out on devising a number of hilarious tricks on the naughty knight.

Blankets are allowed in front of the stage area, then low backed chairs, with high backed chairs behind them, ensuring that everyone gets an excellent view of all the action, of which there is plenty.

Bring a picnic, and plenty of warm clothing.
