On February 17 the skies above Tauranga City Airport will be full of aircraft at the regions first airshow in two years, Tauranga Airshow 2008.

The traditional closing event of the three day Sport Aviation Expo (SportAvex), visitors on airshow day will be able to get close to the dozens of sport/homebuilt aircraft expected to attend SportAvex. With sport/homebuilt aircraft making up approximately twenty percent of New Zealand’s flying population, a number of displays and trade stands will be in the display area with information on building and flying your own aircraft. The Sport Aircraft Association of New Zealand - the association of builders of such aircraft - will itself have a large information stand.

From 11am – 12pm, a number of aircraft from the trade displays will take to the air so those attending can see the aircraft in their element. At midday a lunch-break will allow the crowd, expected to exceed the 15,000 in attendance in 2006, to 'pick a position' on the grassed area north of the city end of Tauranga’s sealed runway in preparation of the start of Tauranga Airshow 2008 at 1pm.

Tauranga Airshow 2008 will feature:

- A number of sport/homebuilt aircraft including; the world’s smallest twin engined aeroplane - the Cri-Cri, or Cricket and a scaled version of a World War 2 P-51 Mustang. (It’s expected to fly in a formation fly-past with an actual full sized warbird P-51 Mustang.)

- Many warbird and historical aircraft; DC-3 Dakota, PBY Catalina flying boat, Russian Yak-52 formation aerobatic team, Korean War era Bell 47 MASH chopper, Harvard, Stearman, Tiger Moth and Dominie.

With extreme aerobatics, high performance glider aerobatics, parachutists, a mass fly-past of helicopters based at Tauranga City Airport, World War 2 “dog-fight” re-enactment, gyrocopters, micro-lights and the Royal New Zealand Air Force “Red Checkers” aerobatics team scheduled to perform, Tauranga Airshow 2008 will be three full hours of aerial entertainment.

SportAvex (Sport Aviation Expo) is the biennial gathering of members of the Sport Aircraft Association New Zealand (SAANZ). The three day event will be held from Friday February 15th to Sunday February 17th, 2008 at Tauranga City Airport.

SportAvex brings scores of aviators - and their aircraft - from all over New Zealand to participate in the event. The three day event includes the association’s annual general meeting, many training seminars, competitions and much flying activity.
