This years 2008 New Zealand Senior Club Championships sees the 3 teams of West City, Howick and Canterbury battle it out in a ‘Home and Away’ series of double headers to decide the countries best club baseball team.

The three day schedule, running from Friday 11th to Sunday 13th of January 2008, will see each Club play off against each other twice to decide who will battle it out for the title on Sunday.

The three-team senior competition will be held at Howick’s home field of Lloyd Elsmore Park with the teams playing 4 games before the winners progress to the Final.

The New Zealand National Club Championships was first contested in 2005, and remains the pinnacle event for New Zealand players with many of the players hoping to secure a place in the New Zealand team to go to the 2008 Australian Provincial Championship competition in Darwin in May.

Fans can expect the battle for club pride to be enhanced by the individual quest for National team selection.

National Championship Overview

Perennial favourites West City will take on Howick in the first game of the National Championships in what could be the preview of the final of the 2008 event.

Game 1 sees the reigning title holders West City eager to prove their dominance over their arch rivals, but with a Howick side boasting a number of experienced pitchers on home soil – the two sides look more evenly matched than ever before.

With a multitude of the country’s up and coming stars on display, fans will be treated to what could well be the “future” faces of New Zealand baseball.

In recent years many would have picked the powerhouse West City side to walk all over the opposition without breaking their stride – but be sure to expect some surprises in their first match ups.

Missing some of their long-serving superstars, West City will be looking to the next crop of talented players; including Byoung Gi, Mark Cooper and Jon Lewis.

Likewise, Howick will hang many of their hopes on the impressive right arm of 18-year-old hurler Andrew Marck who headlines a roster where almost half the players have yet to see their 24th birthday.

While the youth movement will certainly be out in full force, look to a solid core of New Zealand veterans to steady the ship for both sides.

West City will go into Game 2 against Canterbury without last year’s National Champion winning pitcher Stu Vidanage, and will look to their new breed of stars to lead West City on offence and from the mound.

For Canterbury, the return of big hitting powerhouse David Roche and Chad Denny will form a powerful 1-2 punch at the heart of the home team’s line-up and could easily take the game away from West City if their bats get going early.

In what appears to be a very exciting and close fought competition, we could see some of the best baseball this side of the ditch this year. So come on down to Lloyd Elsmore Park in Pakuranga – 138 Cascades Rd – and get behind your club team as they strive for the title of best national club side in the country.
