Janna van Hasselt’s new body of work explores notions of comfort and routine and attempts to establish a sense of belonging in a foreign environment. In Make Yourself at Home, van Hasselt reconciles a tumultuous time she recently spent between Wellington, London, Belgium, Amsterdam and Christchurch. Repeated motifs reiterate the idea of being set in daily routines; these are particularly evident in the Zeven Dagen series (‘Seven Days’ in Dutch). Furthermore, a foretoken of the following piece in series appears in each of the Verslagen pieces (‘Records’), a suite of intensely colourful prints of diary style drawings created intermittently over this 9-month period. The malleable, tactile and playful Rookwolken (‘Puffs’) reflect the artist’s sense of humour and her efforts to find solace in home comforts.

Across the works, gestural marks are combined with careful drawing to describe these personal narratives. Van Hasselt challenges the traditional notions and expectations of printmaking by applying silkscreen and lithographic print processes along with intricate layering of paint to materials intended for use in home furnishings. The resulting pieces have strong textural juxtapositions between print, paint and substrate and a sculptural quality quite unprecedented in printmaking.

Since completing a conjoint BFA/BSc degree at the University of Canterbury in 2004, Janna van Hasselt has been awarded numerous opportunities abroad, including a scholarship to study at the Rhode Island School of Art and Design, an internship at the Edinburgh Printmakers Studio, an internship at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania, USA, and two artist residencies at Frans Masereel Centrum for printmaking in Kasterlee, Belgium.
