Growing up on the Hibiscus Coast surrounded by expanses of land and water, Marisia Dudek has a strong sense of environment; her paintings reflect a nostalgic engagement with the landscape and her past. Dudek’s current body of work leads us into the forest. In the upside to undergrowth Dudek has captured the moments in which the environment has captured her; moments of private epiphany.

These fantastic landscapes are turned upside down as our attention is directed skyward. Cascades of light between treetops are shattered into painterly daubs and facets to dizzying effect, and gnarled tree branches fall in and out of focus in landscapes which heave with a supernatural energy.

Dudek questions the supposed dichotomy between the real and the imaginary when by its very nature, all experience is mediated by the imagination. It is the imagination which helps us to live our lives and to transcend our bodily limitations. It is the imagination which allows us to experience the sublime.
