Ruth Allen sculpts forms with glass. She challenges perceptions and traditions, building structures which are punctuated with space.

Contradictions abound, inter-dimensional language is established. Her work has physical presence, emotional content, moods and expressions. Shadow is used as an integral element that moves and changes.

The works in “Parallel Lives – Synergetic Series” are founded in the Venetian techniques of hot glass canes. Ruth Allen creates linear patterns and colour alterations in tubes and then through a process of manipulation pulls and twists these forming organic shapes and cellular structures. The rhythms of repetition and the sensations of drawing in space arise. She uses gravity and volume, form and formlessness, knits randomness.

Ruth Allen graduated from the Canberra School of Art , Australia (1993) where she studied under Klaus Moje, Elizabeth McClure and the late Stephen Procter. Ruth Allen has attended and conducted workshops, exhibited, undertook residencies and worked consistently with ideas. In 1995 Ruth moved back to NZ to establish a hot glass studio ‘Gloria’. In early 2000 Ruth returned to Australia & has just completed her Master of Fine Arts degree, majoring in glass and sculpture at Monash University, Melbourne, Victoria.

Ruth Allen will be presenting an artist talk at AUT University on Wednesday the 23rd July at 3pm.
Address: AUT University, 24 St Paul St. Room WS101 (inside the Science & Engineering building next door to the new Art & Design building).

Ruth Allen will be in Auckland for her latest glass art exhibition "Parallel Lives - Synergetic Series" at milford galleries auckland.
