The Theatre Sensation of 2008 . . .

A Night with Beau Tyler – Outstanding Theatrical Satire
Written and performed by Peter Feeney , Directed by Greg Cooper.

A night with Beau Tyler expands a typically elite art from of stage theatre into a highly enjoyable, totally accessible and hilarious show that is proving to be as rewarding to younger school audiences as it is to its natural audience of older high-brow theatre critics.

Renowned New Zealand actor Peter Feeney plays the parody character ‘Beau Tyler “ an insufferably smug, self satisfied American motivational guru who’s satirical delivery of obvious statements and circular arguments is so convincing that at times if is wasn’t for the ever present memory of his absurdly ridiculous Memphis Meltdown ice cream TV commercials he could almost seduce and audience into buying into his “full ten day life changing seminal”.

The resemblance between the currently popular prince of the billion dollar self help industry Anthony Robbins and the Beau Tyler character is uncanny.

The delivery and structure of a real time “ Self help seminar “ that is a large part of the play is so true to the format and style of the industry that audiences familiar with the “works” of Dale Carneige, Edward DeBono Richard Kawasaki, The Land Mark Forum and of course Tony Robbins will be left personally ridiculed the irony their own familiarity with the nuances of this bizarre industry.

Audience participation is not compulsory however it is preferable to non participation as Beau abruptly anoints “ non participants “ as ‘ failure buddies ‘ to the “ full participants “ and it gets worse!, but you will have to see the show.

At one level this production can be enjoyed as a comical and extremely amusing parody of one of the cheesiest icons of modern consumer society “US self help guru Anthony Robbins”.

At another level this comedy is an extremely clever critique of the corrosive values of modern capitalism, a classical comedy rich with satirical wit and educated humor that is delivered at such an intense and cracking pace that a critic is left truly in awe actor and writer Peter Feeney’s genius as a play write and as an actor.

Tickets are available from Ticket Direct or the Municipal Box Office.

The Beau Tyler character, fallen guru, rising phoenix-like was a perfect balance of pathos with self-love and ultimately explained why the genre he is subverting works . . . Pulp Magazine.
