Set in the picturesque North Otago town of Oamaru in the Whitestone Country of the Waihemo County. The venue is the Army Drill Hall that is halfway along Ichen street, above the railway crossing on the main road.

The event is the Oamaru Poultry and Canary Society Annual Show for 2008. It is a stone's throw from the old historical sector of the whitestone buildings and fabulous antique shops.

So you can see the show and pick up bargains at the same time. The Oamaru Poultry Shows stimulated and inspired the music of 'Jordan Luck and the Dance Exponents'. In this years performance there will be numerous South Island Championships and New Zealand Championships available for lucky exhibitors. Special events may be added at short notice at the discretion of the Committee included in the Schedule that is not printed yet.

Classes include Old English Game, Heavy and Light breeds, Game bantams, Fancy bantams, Fancy and Flown pigeons. In the cagebirds there are Canaries, Borders, Glosters , British birds, Budgerigars, and Parrots. These will be judged on the Friday morning by a team of experts from around the country who dedicate their time to sort out the winners from the losers. However its not all about that.

There is an excellent atmosphere and kitchen with hot soup for those cold winter days. Oamaru frequently turns on the good weather by the lunch time. If travelling to Oamaru from the South; try the old Coast Road turning off at the Mill junction. There are some nice sea and pastoral views with crops and cattle being strip fed. Great lines of steaming breath against a frosty backdrop. There is a nice cafe halfway along if you need a cup of tea or coffee. You pass through Kakanui on this road and end up coming out virtually at the old historical zone by the Drill Hall at Ichen street if you follow your nose. Could be tomatoes all round if you stop at the right place.

There will be high quality birds for sale as this is the last show in the circuit. The local pet shop is usually there with a stall. So grab the cheque book or plastic and head for the Oamaru Poultry Show [and the antique shops]. Remember the show finishes on Saturday afternoon.
