The Kirwee Players season of Gilbert and Sullivan’s H.M.S. Pinafore will be Kirwee Players 33rd production and their second Gilbert and Sullivan.

H.M.S. Pinafore is anchored at Portsmouth and her crew is preparing the ship for a visit from Sir Joseph Porter KCB, the first Lord of the Admiralty. Local bumboat woman Buttercup has taken this opportunity to come aboard and sell her trinkets and knick-knacks to the sailors and maybe even spend some time with ship’s commander, Captain Corcoran. Sir Joseph is coming (accompanied by all of his female relatives) to meet his intended, Josephine, who is Captain Corcoran’s daughter.

Josephine is not looking forward to meeting her betrothed and a picture of him that her father has given her does nothing to alleviate her fears. Her father is hopeful that Josephine will follow his wishes and make the advantageous match with the wealthy Sir Joseph, but Josephine has already fallen for Ralph Rackstraw, a humble sailor on board her father’s ship. Ralph secretly returns her affections but realising that they are from different social classes does not feel able to express his feelings to her.

As with all good stories the road to true love never does run smooth. Will all their true feelings be revealed? Can they look past their social standings and prove that true love really does level all ranks?

Director Mabel Knight is a well-known figure on the Kirwee Players stage, for her acting, directing for Kirwee Players, and even writing plays for them for the MCAC Short Play Festival. Mabel has taken the original Gilbert and Sullivan script, retrieved lines previously cut from the original work and revised and updated some of the language as well as adding in parts to include more of the cast.

Laurie Ennor is also returning to Kirwee Players as Musical Director having previously worked with Mabel on the successful season of Annie Get Your Gun. Laurie has an extensive background in Gilbert and Sullivan shows having been Musical Director for productions of The Mikado, Iolanthe and The Pirates of Penzance. He has also been on stage in two productions of The Mikado, once in the men’s chorus and once as a school girl in the women’s chorus, while at school himself.
