NZ International Film Festivals and MIC Toi Rerehiko Proudly Present - Homegrown 08.

NZ Short Films are showcased over three weekends during the festival. This extraordinary programme selection highlights the talented film makers that excel in this form.

Homegrown 1: Works on Film

Friday 18 July, 6.00pm, Paramount
Saturday 21 July, 2.30pm, Parmount
76 minutes

This year’s selection is drawn from a particularly inspiring year of local short filmmaking. From the screenplay to the final edit, these are films of intelligence and beauty; they are daring and difficult, witty and poignant. They are films about love, loneliness, friendship and survival, which move comfortably at their own pace, telling their story with confidence and clarity and offering a contemporary view of New Zealand and our place in the world.

Homegrown 2: Works on Film and Video

Saturday 26 July, 6.00pm, Film Archive
Monday 28 July 2.45pm, Film Archive
74 minutes

With works that are characterised by a strong spirit of innovation and skilful irreverence this year’s second programme demonstrates a keen eye for drama, pathos and black humour. From the dark and delightfully tragicomic to the achingly poignant, this year’s line up of maverick films explores the murky side of human nature whilst demonstrating a quiet faith in compassion and even whimsy. Repressed fears and dark unraveling desires collude with the tender and the ridiculous in this premium line up of local marvels. This year’s selection is comprised of both film and video and promises to be visually stunning, technically vigorous and as always highly original.

Homegrown 3: Fast Fire Video - Animated and experimental shorts

Friday 1 August, 6.15pm, Film Archive
Sunday 3 August, 6.00pm Film Archive
66 minutes

This selection brings you a fast-fire combination of thirteen highly adventurous and thoughtful approaches to drama, animation and experimental film. From the melancholic to the deliciously satirical, this year's third Homegrown programme embodies the extraordinarily beautiful, poignant and often absurdly funny travails of human and alien conditions. The deeply absorbing vision of these works transforms this programme from a spectator sport into a genuinely affecting and totally unforgettable experience.
