Christchurch Symphony violinist, Cathy Irons and pianist Mark Secker present a lunch time violin recital featuring Prokofiev's classical Violin Sonata no 2, Saint-Saens' Elegie, to rock and jazz influenced pieces by Arnold and a commissioned work by local composer Raffensperger.

The duo have performed regularly together, and their CD "Inspired" has been broadcast on Radio New Zealand Concert.

Raffensperger's work entitled, “The End of the World, Again” combines both rock and classical styles, and is bright, fun and rhythmic. This arrangement is proof that rosin and ivory have a place with steel and plastic in the world of pounding rhythms and wild, apocalyptic sounds (Peter).

Prokofiev's 2nd Violin Sonata op 94a is the main work of the concert – elegant and classical in style. Originally composed for flute and reworked by the composer for violinist David Oistrakh, it is lyrical and vocal with its exquisite melodies, but also virtuosic and suited to the violin.

To conclude the programme, Cathy and Mark will play Saint-Saens" seldom performed romantic Elegie which is moving and beautiful in its simplicity.
