The sounds of aerial and ground battles will reverberate around Tauranga City Airport, when two local businesses commemorate D-Day.

The Bay of Plenty Classic Aircraft Trust, which operates the Classic Flyers Aviation Museum and the Tauranga Military Collection, and Adventure Aviation are organising a day long event, which is expected to draw participants from as far away as Auckland and the Waikato.

Events will be based near the MASH camp, outside the Tauranga Military Collection premises, and include re-enactments, displays of militaria, and militaria sales tables.

The first re-enactment is expected to involve a dogfight between a Messerschmitt ME 108 and North American Harvards, before ground based troops attempt the capture of the German pilot. Later in the day a re-enactment depicting a battle in Asia between Allied soldiers and a group of Viet Cong will take place. Both re-enactments include smoke and simulated ground fire.

An invitation to promote the New Zealand Army on the day, has been issued to the local Tauranga Army Recruiter, and also to 6th Hauraki Battalion Group.

Entry to the event includes entry to both the aviation museum and the military museum. Joyrides will be available in the Bell 47 “MASH” and Hughes 500 helicopters from Adventure Aviation, classic aircraft from Classic Flyers, and the Warbirds DC3.
