Okkervil River, the talented Texan five-piece band led by charismatic singer/songwriter Will Sheff, return to our shores for two special performances in support of their critically acclaimed 2007 release, The Stage Names.

With their latest album, Okkervil River dynamite the walls of Black Sheep Boy, their previous album’s gothic, moss-walled castle from the inside, and let in the glaring sun. Where Black Sheep Boy presented a fairytale of dark babbling streams and high distant towers, The Stage Names takes place in an unmistakably modern world. One where snowy televisions blast into cheap hotels the spectral images of soap stars endlessly betraying each other. One where losers in late-night bars languish to the beat of their favorite songs, and where broken-down actresses place their final cell calls from lonely mansions high in the hills.

Riddled with characters real and fake, with true-life biography and brazenly fabricated autobiography, and combining the relics of high culture with the crumpled-up trash of low culture, The Stage Names is the band’s finest achievement and places them alongside contemporaries My Morning Jacket, The Shins and Modest Mouse. Live, Okkervil Riverare hypnotic as frontman Will Sheff leads his band, howling and stomping all the way through their highly-charged set. Lou Reed thinks Okkervil River is a standout modern indie band, and guess what – we do too.

Don’t miss out. Tickets on sale now through Slowboat (Wellington) and Real Groovy (Auckland).
