John Burnside writes of an ‘inward country’ one seems to awaken deep within. A noted memoirist ("A Lie About My Father") and extremely vivid prose writer in both novel and short story form, it is as a poet he continues to astonish.

He won the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize for Feast Days (1992) and the Whitbread Poetry Prize in 2000 for "The Asylum Dance". The Times Literary Supplement said of him, “Burnside has a stillness and emotional restraint, a respect for the observer and the observed alike which is serious, exemplary and rare.”

Chair: Siobhan Harvey.
