War rages in China and South America, Britain relies entirely on the United States for food and energy, women are forcibly fitted with contraceptive devices, climate change and restricted freedom send suicide rates soaring, hospitals and supermarkets are closed forever: this is the world in which Sarah Hall sets her third novel.

"The Carhullan Army" is a departure from the territory of Sarah’s previous prize-winning "Haweswater" and "The Electric Michelangelo", set respectively in 1930s rural Cumbria and turn-of-the-century coastal resorts. “Tough, thorny, bloody minded” Colin Greenland wrote in The Guardian. "The Carhullan Army" collected the 2007 John Llewellyn Rhys Prize.

Chair: Carole Beu.
