MTV and the Kickstart judging panel has been traveling the country to check out first hand what New Zealand's top musicians have to offer.

After watching the 28 bands that made it to the heats, the judges got together on Monday 12 May and after several hours, came to an agreement on the following bands that will battle it out at the final on Friday 30th May.

MTV Kickstart Finalists 2008

Clap Clap Riot

Clap Clap Riot are a ferocious mix of dueling guitars, solid thumping drums and wild vocals. With edgy guitar tones and a high energy live show the band aim to recreate the excitement that has been lost from the essence of live performance. They have had comparisons to bands like The Small Faces and Cut off Your Hands along with receiving praise from New Zealand media for their searing live shows.

Trigger Theory

Trigger Theory (aka Double-T) is four young, musical boys from Tauranga. They come together to join each of their different gifts, and create an amazing, musical super-force! They aspire to spread their unique pop-rock sound, and their intensely energetic live performance around the whole universe, and pleasure the senses of all human kind, and any other creatures that are found on their voyages.

Lydia Cole

In a scene saturated by nylon-stringed indie hopefuls, Auckland's Lydia Cole quietly stands apart. Cole's calmly crafted folk masterpieces are endearing her to audiences local and abroad, through MySpace and her soulful performances. Lydia Cole is gaining respect in the industry as a promising 21st century troubadour.

Cause For Alliance

Auckland-based metal band Cause For Alliance formed in mid-2006. At the core of their musical engine room are brothers Anton (guitar) and Sergy Minenko (drums) who, like Vinnie Paul and Dimebag Darrell of Pantera, have been playing music together ever since they could walk. The line-up is completed by Michael Metzler (vocals), James Boyd (guitar) and Julian Bowater (bass). At the core of the band are strong bonds of friendship and immediate chemistry that shows no signs of dissipating.

Bear Cat

Bear Car is made up of three members. Jocee Tuck is 24 and Dan Trevarthen is 25. Recent addition to Bear Cat's live shows - Romelli Rodriguez - is 19. Dan has always lived in Auckland, Romelli was raised in Hamilton prior to moving here, and Jocee was raised in Blenheim prior to moving here.

The name Bear Cat comes from how the Chinese write "Panda" - by writing the symbols for "bear" and "cat" alongside each other. Putting two disparate beasts alongside each other is such a ham-fisted way to describe an animal. Likewise, Jocee is a girl, Dan's a boy, Jocee's got a beautiful voice and likes nicer music than Dan... and most of Dan's favourite singers have terrible voices and he is always trying to find an excuse to yell in songs.

These five bands will battle it out on Friday 30 May from 6pm at the Viaduct Harbour Marine Village, Shed 3, 135 Halsey Street, Auckland, to be crowned the MTV Kickstart winner 2008.

The winning band will pick up an amazing prize pack including:
