Local novelists have recently produced a bumper crop of assured work.

Laurence Fearnley’s “Edwin and Matilda” has been called ‘the novel of the year’, while Louise Wareham Leonard’s second novel “Miss Me A Lot Of” has also been highly praised. Carl Nixon’s transition from short stories to the novel with “Rocking Horse Road" brings a much needed male viewpoint to literature. Duncan Sarkies’ second novel, “Two Little Boys”, is “dark, wildly funny, vivid and brilliantly original” (Fiona Farrell).

When the world is saturated by “reality” television, babbling blogs and egocentric face books, how do fiction writers create a space in an increasingly noise-filled environment? Will the novel maintain its urgency and topicality in the 21st century?
