In Colin McCahon: The Titirangi Years 1953-59, Peter Simpson examines in detail the rich period in which McCahon and his family lived in a tiny bach among the dripping kauri. The bush and beach preoccupied McCahon as a painter as he struggled to come to terms with the legacy of cubism. A 1958 sojourn in America led to further dramatic changes: his work got bigger, looser, more gestural and infinitely more varied.

Peter Simpson discusses images from the book illustrating all of these developments and McCahon’s curatorial work at the Auckland City Art Gallery.

Introduction: Linda Tyler.
