Publishing is experiencing the twin phenomenon of a shrinking market for adult fiction while non-fiction sales boom. Prime among these are science books, written for lay readerships but still demanding both intellectually and technically. Readers who might not have picked up a science book since their last year at secondary school are fascinated by the current crop of science writing.
