Although it could be argued that collecting was the quintessential colonising act, we can all now enjoy the beauty of Shakespeare’s folios left to us so generously by Governor Grey. Two collections are explicated in Iain Sharp’s Real Gold: Treasures of the Auckland City Libraries and Stuart Strachan and Linda Tyler’s Ka Taoka Hakena: Treasures from the Hocken Collections.

This illustrated talk explores weird and wonderful items from both collections.

Chair: Douglas Lloyd Jenkins, director of the Hawkes Bay Museum and Gallery, which proudly boasts of a bovine hairball once belonging to Lady McLean in its collection.
