This year’s Made in New Zealand explores the growing diversity of our culture and the way our music reflects that.

Singer Whirimako Black takes the lead in this year’s concert with her interpretations of jazz standards in Te Reo. Described by The Press as having a “rich, velvety voice that holds one’s attention”, Black is truly an outstanding musician.

While Black’s songs pay tribute to the tangata whenua, the NZSO is delighted to be giving the world premiere of Gao Ping’s new Piano Concerto. Gao was born in Chengdu in the Sichuan Province of China and Beijing-based musicologist Li Xi-An says Gao Ping is a representative member of the “sixth generation of composers” who grew up in the 1970s and 1980s and share a sensibility that embraces post-modern aesthetics.

WHIRIMAKO BLACK sings He Raumati (Summertime), Konehunehu (Misty), Marangai (Stormy Weather) plus more.
