As the distinguished historical biogeographer Gareth Nelson once wrote ‘explain New Zealand and the rest of the world falls into place’. Despite the efforts directed towards this question, we are still far from a satisfactory answer. The suggestion from some geologists that perhaps there was no emergent land here 23 million years ago has stimulated fresh interest in the question of origins.

George Gibbs is a graduate of Victoria University with a PhD from Sydney University. He has published numerous scientific papers and is the author of four books on New Zealand insects and the recent Montana award winning book “Ghosts of Gondwana” (2006).
