In a first for Auckland five of the country’s most prominent painters have joined forces to take on the city’s art scene. x5 (times five) consists of Jane Blackmore, Alison Coulthurst, Matt Guild, Anne-Marie Jean and Emma Wright. The show will feature around 50 works and opens on 30 October for two weeks at the Heards Building in Parnell.

The show was the brainchild of Emma Wright, described as one of New Zealand’s most successful artists, and Anne-Marie Jean who quickly engaged sought after Australian painter, Alison Coulthurst. Emma, currently artist in residence on Waiheke Island says “We are a like-minded yet diverse group. Each of us will show between 8 to 10 paintings which contrast with and complement each other, ranging from the abstract to photo-realism. Prices will be reasonable, from around $2,000 to $6,000.”

Anne-Marie, Jane and Matt have exhibited together in Wellington in a show that formed the model for the Auckland x5 exhibition. This will be the first time the five artists feature together under one roof. x5 have chosen to hold the exhibition themselves in a non gallery environment. By grouping together and sharing their networks and clients they’re confident they will attract a wider audience than the traditional galleries offer.

Two available retail units in the Heards Building will be the venue with frontage on to Parnell Road and Ruskin Street. The preview will be held on Thursday 30 October and the show is open to the public from the 31 October to 9 November 11.00am - 6.00pm Monday to Thursday and 10.00am - 4.00pm Saturday and Sunday. The show has a charity element with paintings being auctioned off online in a bid to raise $20,000 for the Child Cancer Foundation.
