Comedians and staff at The Classic on Queen St are donating their unique resources to stage a night of live comedy, with the proceeds going towards renovating a tired staff-room used by midwives while they work their long, often stressful shifts at the Women’s Assessment Unit at Auckland Hospital.

The project is a show of support - and a thank you - from the comedy community to the midwives for the care given to Classic Comedy owners, Scott and Bridget Blanks, when their daughter Kate was stillborn at 41 weeks in February this year.

The Women’s Assessment unit is based in the old part of the hospital, and is the first port of call for women experiencing problems with their pregnancies. It is a ward staffed by midwives who have to deal with the unexpected . They are often understaffed, work long shifts, sacrifice their days off and are called upon to deal with deeply emotional and stressful situations. Much of this is just expected of them with little thanks in return.

During their breaks and any downtime the midwives have a dreary, ill-equipped staff room with uncomfortable, mismatched furniture. There isn’t even a dishwasher to keep the cups clean or a basic coffee machine.

Scott and Bridget Blanks have nothing but praise for the care and service they received before, during and after Kate’s birth and wanted to show their appreciation towards the midwives. The close community around them at The Classic responded immediately and offered their time, talents and resources to help raise a little pot of gold to help complete the project.

They also hope that appropriate suppliers will come to the party with some hefty discounts on their goods and services.

The “Mucking In For the Midwives” live show on Thursday 4 September, will feature an all-star line-up of New Zealand’s top comedians including Jeremy Corbett , Michele A’Court, and Brendhan Lovegrove. It will also feature appearances by some of our best-loved comics who only rarely appear on the circuit these days – Dean Butler and Te Radar. Everyone in the line-up – which also includes Irene Pink, Jeremy Elwood, Paul Ego, and Justine Smith – has worked alongside Scott over the last 15 years, helping to establish the local comedy industry.

“We’re a small, busy industry,” says veteran comic, Michele A’Court, “and we’ve developed a strong sense of family. All of us were devastated when Scott and Bridget lost Kate earlier this year and wondered what we could do to make a difference. So saying thank you to the midwives - who helped them when we couldn’t – with a comedy show is the best thing we can do for our family.”
