In Changing Sheds, Kate Small reconstructs familiar institutional spaces that evoke personal encounters. Her seven square paintings feature women in togs and bathing caps rendered in a saturated palette that lends an intensity to the social scenarios depicted and brings to mind that pungent chlorine smell associated with the public bath.

The sumptuous, buttery surfaces of Small's paintings make ordinary social interactions, generous and freshly compelling. Her appreciation of the medium of painting means her subjects are in many ways caught up in a vernacular abstractions. Small's grasp of painterly language is her means of observing the social world. The paintings are made compelling by the shimmer of under-painting, careful layering of surfaces, finely-tuned edges and the strange spatial dynamics created by competing expanses of colour.

Kate Small was born in Lower Hutt in 1968. She graduated from Elam School of Fine Arts in 1991. Later this year her work will be seen in After Hours: Eight Contemporary Painters curated by Greg O'Brien at City Gallery, Wellington.
