Every two years since 1956, New Zealand’s best young and aspiring singers sign-up to compete in the country’s most significant singing competition: the Lexus Song Quest. The prize-winners join a special club that includes a who’s who of New Zealand’s top operatic stars – Teddy Tahu Rhodes, Jonathan Lemalu, Anna Leese, Malvina Major, Kiri Te Kanawa . . .

New Zealand produces an extraordinary number of talented classical singers for such a small country. The 2009 Lexus Song Quest auditions show that the trend continues with the nationwide entrants promising a tough competition ahead.

Six finalists will appear in the Final concert in the Auckland Town Hall with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and will be judged by the great German tenor Siegfried Jerusalem. After an illustrious career as one of the world’s leading Heldentenors, Prof Jerusalem now devotes much of his time to training young singers.

The first, second and third prize winners will accompany Siegfried Jerusalem on a Recital Tour around the country immediately after the Song Quest Final Concert, giving audiences the chance to hear these promising young performers.

They will perform an entertaining mix of opera and song including highlights from the Lexus Song Quest final held in Auckland and will be accompanied by one of the country’s leading accompanists Terence Dennis, official accompanist for the Song Quest.

Don’t miss the opportunity to hear some of New Zealand’s young opera stars in the making.
