Organising a sculpture symposium in Raglan has been on Tai Meuli’s (well established Raglan sculptor; designer of Hamilton 400 V8 trophies) mind for the last three years and recently the right people put their hand up to join and support him in realising this dream. The inaugural symposium is now a fact.

Upon meeting Tai you could be surprised that this humble, self-reflecting character is also a passionate person who has driven himself to these high achievements. He shares and explains his vision:

The Raglan Area School agreed to a proposal to use their serene waterfront location named ‘Joy’s Point’ as the venue for this exciting symposium.

During 10 days, 15 well established New Zealand sculptors will be slugging their guts out to finish their masterpieces in time for the sculpture auction.

In the meantime, the sculptors will also give 4 senior art students the opportunity to learn all facets of sculpting and the diverse skills and techniques that are being showcased. They will work with these students on a sculpture for the school during the ten days of the event. This is their way of thanking the school for the spiritual and inspiring venue.

With this symposium we want to create a platform and bring the art of sculpting closer to the people.

Our wish is for visitors to experience the creative development of diverse sculptures (native wood and hard stone, Maori carving, abstract, contemporary, multimedia and realisation).

It would be a great achievement if we can make an impact on both the artists as well as the visitors; for the people to be overall happy with the outcome.

The sculptures will be auctioned on the evening of April 24th after a fundraising dinner for the Youth Arts Scholarship at the Raglan Town Hall. Radio and TV personality Te Radar is the guest speaker and auctioneer for this special evening. Limited tickets are available for $55 each or two for $99.
