Auckland Fringe offers blank canvas for the avant-garde . . .

Every Festival and every city needs a Fringe and in 2009 we’re getting one! A heady mix of in your face drama, off the wall dance and atypical street performance is expected when the unconventional unleash their finest creative genius early 2009 for the first ever Auckland Fringe Festival.

Auckland Fringe 2009 is a new venture supported by THE EDGE® and Auckland Festival and will be a platform for independent artists to present their work in their own way; and for audiences to engage in a variety of eclectic arts experiences.

Kicking off one week before Auckland Festival 2009, the Auckland Fringe programme will run from February 27 to March 22, 2009. The inner city’s Basement will become the hub of the Auckland Fringe with a full programme on offer including major opening and closing festival events designed to infect this popular venue with fringe fever.

Artist registrations for Auckland Fringe open today and continue until 14 November, with forms available for download at www.aucklandfringe.org.nz

THE EDGE® Associate Director, Arts Programmes Craig Cooper says adding Auckland Fringe to the events calendar gives independent artists and public audiences a chance to widen their arts experience.

“Like similar festivals around the world, Auckland Fringe will offer an uncensored, open access festival programme that aims to create a critical mass of arts opportunities in Auckland over February and March,” he said.

“Any performer or artist who wants to present in the Auckland region can register for Auckland Fringe. We’re expecting to see new plays, dance, exhibitions, new media, music and everything and anything in between.”

Associate Director for Auckland Festival Mark Burlace says that running Auckland Fringe alongside Auckland Festival adds an extra dimension to what’s on offer to Auckland audiences.

“Auckland Festival 2009 has an excellent line-up of established local and international artists so Auckland Fringe is the perfect stage for undiscovered and independent artists to present their work,” he said.

“Now the Auckland Festival is established as part of the Auckland cultural landscape, the addition of a Festival Fringe will provide more opportunities for artists at a time when audiences are at their most adventurous and enthusiastic.”

THE EDGE® and Auckland Festival Trust have committed to establishing the infrastructure for the first Auckland Fringe; however, the aim is for a separate Auckland Fringe entity to manage the festival in the future.

More details on individual events to be posted soon.
