Some of New Zealand’s best face painters will be in action in Takapuna this Saturday, battling it out in what is set to be another closely-fought New Zealand International Face Painting Competition.

Last year leading Auckland body artist Yolanda Bartram took out the professional face painting section with a primate-creature, a profile of a chimp with a butterfly on its nose, painted on Myrthe Heydenrijk.

The face painting contest is a warm-up for the New Zealand Body Art Awards, which are about to enter their fourth year.

The competition is also open to tertiary, high school and intermediate students – while primary school and pre-school children can compete in a mask making contest.

The face painting and mask making competitions are the centrepiece of the NZ ColorFest, which is held at the Lake House Arts Centre in Takapuna. The Colorfest is a day of fun in the sun with competitions, exhibitions, stalls, glitter tattoos, music, blokarts, archery, a bouncy castle and mask making.

Organiser Mem Bourke says special thanks to Youthtown, we can expect an over whelming gig line up. We have DJ Manchu in the morning with J Williams in the afternoon. You can expect a splash of colour that reflects this year’s theme Fantasia Asia. Youthtown will be hosting a large collection of talented artist in Auckland’s North Shore, including our international artist, Australian Maria Lucia. Maria is here competing in the NZ International Face Painting competition before heading off to compete in competitions around the world. We expect this to be a wonderful, adventurous experience for everyone involved of every age.

So grab the kids, jump in the car and get ready for some mind-blowing colour!

The ColorFest is part of the New Zealand Festival of Body Art, which includes flagship event the New Zealand Body Art Awards – which are this year scheduled for July 25 with the theme “Fantasia Asia.”
