No Age and Jay Reatard . . .

Two cities, two shows, two of the most exciting groups thrown up from the underground in recent years… electrically live in New Zealand!

“Bands should be fun and exciting, and they should push all the buttons at the same time. They should make you feel like you are going to explode, and make you utterly confused and inspired at the same time . . . ”

So says Dean Spunt, who, along with Randy Randall, comprises LA duo NO AGE: the sizzlingly-hot act at the centre of the most inspired music climate to affect Southern California for eons. The band’s Sub Pop debut Nouns has been hailed everywhere from Amsterdam to Atlanta to Auckland, a “truly psyched, soaring sound” that NZ will now have the chance to hear in person rather than just on a record player.

And completing the double bill is another act that pushes all the buttons and makes you feel like exploding: the magnificent JAY REATARD, a Memphis artist who has busily re-defined the words “garage”, “punk”, and “prolific” over the last decade. The last two years alone has seen the acclaimed album Blood Visions, and a relentless barrage of singles recently collected on two separate albums: Singles 06-07 (on In The Red) and Matador Singles 08 (on Matador, naturally).

Strangely, both acts are said to be partly-inspired by “Kiwi pop” . . . who knew?

It’s no secret that we are living in interesting musical times, and the pairing of two separate acts driving things forward on completely different trajectories is testament to this. The era of cynicism, elitism and retrogressive musical divisions is thankfully over; and “street art” has nothing to do with scrawling on walls. NO AGE are the prime movers of LA all-ages club The Smell, a small artist/audience-friendly space in a less-than-salubrious part of downtown’s skid row, that in recent times has gained worldwide renown as the unpretentious centre of LA’s current musical resurgence. Their tuneful chaos has been described both as “the Misfits and Black Flag meets the hissy lo-fi of Pavement’s Slanted And Enchanted and the ecstatic throb of My Bloody Valentine’s Isn’t Anything” and as “microtonal symphonies for massed amped-up guitars cut down to two minutes with vocals, chord changes and drums”.

After releasing more than 15 albums with various projects, JAY REATARD currently leads a trio, and is packing more hooks and thrills into his music than ever before. The veritable explosion of releases in the last two years has seen him travel from “sub-two-minute songs about killing people” to “drony psychedelic voyage(s) through sleep”, and “essentially doing exactly what is and what isn’t expected from him, ready make the next step toward whatever sound catches his fancy next”.

The buzz about this double-bill is huge; and these shows WILL sell out. The wise will get in quickly to ensure they don’t miss out. Tickets on sale from Friday 30 October.
