Hawkes Bay to batten down the hatches as Batucada Sound Machine roll into town.

Loosely translated, ‘Batucada’ means percussive samba jam. Throw in two guitars, bass, keyboards, a slick horn section and one of the NZ’s finest MCs, and you have BSM - Batucada Sound Machine. The 12-piece super group has evolved from impromptu “batucada” sessions to become one of the country’s most sought after acts. They are heading to Tokomaru Bay for one night only - Sat Jan 17: and playing at The Te Puka Tavern (the night prior, they play at the Cabana in Napier).

BSM’s live show has seen them garner a legion of fans around the world, from music lovers to dance freaks alike. They will be showcasing tunes off their acclaimed debut studio album ‘Rhythm and Rhyme’ produced by Neil Sparkes (Transglobal Underground) and mixed at the legendary Avatar Studios in NY.

“This is an outrageously impressive journey in rhythm and groove – red hot percussion, smoking horns, serious funk that just makes you move and feel good. This album should be on every party playlist this summer”. Daniel Wrightson, Uno Magazine.

“This debut... with its related funk family of samba, hip-hop, salsa and dub – all the time laced with a Brazilian spice – should propel the Batucada Sound Machine to where they belong; in the spotlight.” Peter Thornton, Rip it Up

BSM’s tasty concoction of Brazilian, Cuban and Afro-beat rhythms is given a hip hop front courtesy MC Hazaduz (of Che Fu & the Krates fame). This kingpin of the rising local hip hop scene lays solid rhymes over the massive samba-reggae percussion while the band adds rich pacific soul, reggae and funk flavours.

“As the numbers suggest, the sound BSM make is massive, with a horn section, a seven-piece percussion line-up, MC and drums. Their high-energy gigs take in a breathtaking variety of tempos, timings, beats, styles and rhymes. They sing in Portuguese, Spanish and English and have drawn favourable comparisons with Ozomatli, Manu Chao and Chico Science.” Claire Prentice, Scotland on Sunday

The rapidly rising popularity of BSM has resulted in the band making the bill at numerous well respected events around the world - over the past 18 months – including WOMAD UK, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Byron Bay Blues Fest, Sydney Festival, Woodford Festival and most major festivals in NZ.

BSM are chomping at the bit to bring their full frontal attack to Hawkes Bay for the first time. Now might be the time to issue a wee warning for the local folk – given half the chance, Batucada Sound Machine are sure to turn the bay into a massive melee of song and dance…you have been warned! Te vejo la!
