Parishioners and friends of St. Luke’s Church, Remuera, have for some years enjoyed an annual choral feast presented by the chamber choir Orlando Singers. This year the choir will present “Commemorations”, a concert featuring music by Handel, Haydn, Purcell and Mendelssohn, composers who mark anniversaries in 2009. As well, a major work by Benjamin Britten will be performed. This is Britten’s festival cantata “Rejoice in the Lamb”, a striking setting of poems by English poet Christopher Smart. Smart was an eccentric genius who spent some time in a lunatic asylum, but was able to produce poetry of haunting beauty. In “Rejoice in the Lamb” the choir sing joyous alleluias to begin and end the work, and the central section features solos and choruses offering praise to God through elements of the natural world, including solos for a cat and a mouse.
