Trick of the Light is a mystery tale; Duncum calls it a 'puzzle box' in his introduction.

The plot is interwoven with Arthur Alien Thomas's second trial. Duncum begins the play in the present day, thrusting the reader into the middle of a narrative that began thirty years earlier.

Brother and sister, Bevan and Clare, return to a rural motel room in which their parents, Tom and Jan, spent a night in 1973. They are fulfilling Jan's last request, bringing her ashes back to the scene of a pivotal moment in which innocence and trust both national and personal were lost. Symbolically, the motel room has not been opened for thirty years.

Their attempts to unravel what happened there throw up more questions than they answer and lead to a series of mistaken speculations. The second half of the play takes us back to that night in 1973, refocuses the spotlight whose rays have fractured over time and provides the audience with an insight into what actually happened between Tom and Jan.

Directed by Dominique Ware.
