Stellar cast for Orpheus Choir’s Messiah. Since its first performance in Dublin in 1742, Handel’s Messiah has thrilled audiences worldwide every year. Wellington audiences have their chance to hear this magnificent choral work performed by the Orpheus Choir in the city’s much-loved Town Hall. Under the baton of Michael Fulcher, the choir is joined by the Vector Wellington Orchestra and a stellar line-up of internationally acclaimed artists.

Dunedin-born lyric coloratura soprano Ana James, a recent graduate of the Benjamin Britten International Opera School, Royal College of Music London has received glowing reviews in all her appearances.

Helen Medlyn, a 2002 Arts Foundation of New Zealand Laureate has been described by many as “a national treasure” and “New Zealand’s favourite mezzo.”

New Zealander Keith Lewis is one of the world’s busiest tenors. He appears regularly throughout the UK, Europe and North America.

Bass Martin Snell, also Dunedin-born, has had a distinguished career since winning the Mobil Song Quest in 1993 and is now based in Switzerland where he works as a freelance performer.

Rarely do audiences get to hear artists of this calibre in one performance.

The Messiah is one of the most popular works in western choral literature. It presents an interpretation of the Christian view of the Messiah, following the story of the Nativity through the Passion, and culminating at Easter. The Orpheus Choir are performing a near complete version of the work in the style of the period so highly acclaimed in its recent performance of Bach’s Mass in B minor.

This early-evening performance is a perfect lead-in to Christmas. With the magnificent sounds of the Orpheus Choir, a cast of highly acclaimed soloists, and Wellington’s fine orchestra, the event sure to thrill.
