Joanne Chester - Bio

Music has always been a large part of Joanne’s world and she has performed many times throughout her life in various contexts. She has always loved singing but only in the last 3 years, has she been pursuing it seriously. Joanne spent 4 years studying Music Education at University, graduating in 2005, and is teaching music part time while pursuing her career as a singer/songwriter.

In August 2007, Joanne joined Queen City Big Band, both playing trumpet and singing, which has helped her gain experience performing before large audiences. Among other things, singing with Queen City has given Jo the opportunity to sing along side Ray Woolf and she has also been privileged to perform for several thousand people and lead them in their favourite Christmas songs at Carols by Candlelight at Potters Park Christmas for the last 3 years.

2009 has also seen Joanne sing around Auckland in smaller groups,- a duo with Harlee McIlveen and an un-named covers band with brothers Daniel and Reuben Munro. She has also been gigging solo, singing both originals and covers and accompanying herself on guitar.

Joanne has always had an interest in song writing and in spring 2008, she recorded her first acoustic album in a friend’s home studio, consisting of 10 original songs. Half way through 2009, Joanne decided to record her first EP and so by the end of 2009 has recorded 5 of her original songs with band arrangements. She is going on tour this summer around New Zealand playing in 15 different venues throughout the North and South Islands.
