Whatungarongaro te tangata, toitū te whenua
As man disappears from sight, so the land remains.

I have chosen to engage conceptually with the notion of light. A camera is an instrument that requires light to register and image. Fungi, on the other hand, do not require light for growth, germinating in dark, damp environments. A camera has the capacity to capture a moment, compose a memory. Fungi are the principal decomposers of an ecosystem, providing nutrients for the natural environment.

As light is contrasted with darkness, so the notion of capturing is contrasted against a cycle of rejuvenation. I am interested in these juxtapositions and how they comment on the relationship we have with Papatūānuku (earth). The construction of worlds we each participate in leaves a far greater imprint than our fleeting existence.
