'Dear Trustable Partner' features new paintings by Douglas Stichbury and Arie Hellendoorn.

Stichbury's recent work examines the myths and conventions within visual language. Where there is a deficiency of an intangible attribute such as status, power or an emotion, it is common for an image to be put in place of it in compensation. The image is something so flexible that anything can be associated with it, and it can be associated with anything. The concern of this new set of works is these myth generating associations, many of which veil hidden agendas and unsound premises.

Hellendoorn's practice sits between abstract and figurative painting traditions. His interest lies in historical modes of production - as a consequence his work is very practice driven. The surface quality of the paintings is integral to his aesthetic.

Interdispersed among solo works by each artist are collaborative paintings that have been started by one artist and finished by the other. These works represent a one-way conversation and the outcome is a mix of satire, parody, imitation and destruction.

Dear Trustable Partner is Stichbury's first solo show at Suite. He holds a Masters degree in Fine Arts from Massey and has exhibited at the Hirschfeld Gallery (with Arie Helledoorn in 2007 and in Further Convictions Pending, 2010), Enjoy Public Art Gallery and the University of Southern Queensland.

Hellendoorn has had two previous solo exhibitions at Suite and was one of the first artists to join the gallery. He holds an Honours degree in Fine Arts from Massey and has exhibited at the Hirschfeld Gallery, Enjoy Public Art Gallery and High Street Project.

Works by both artists are held in public and private collections.
