Expand your enjoyment of orchestral music with Unwrap: Schubert – an early evening concert designed to reveal some of the creative and artistic secrets behind the notes the orchestra plays.

Graham Abbott | Conductor

In Recent times Graham has become renowned for bringing the inner workings of musical masterpieces to life in an exciting way through concerts and his acclaimed radio programmes 'Keys to Music' which was hugely popular in NZ.

Schubert | Symphony No. 8 (“Unfinished Symphony”)

In June Graham Abbott leads the Auckland Philharmonia in a masterly unpicking of Schubert’s “Unfinished Symphony”.

Why did Schubert leave the symphony unfinished? What are the themes the composer explores? Was this really the pinnacle of Schubert’s genius, as some have claimed?

After a short introduction to the music, he unravels some of the mysteries of structure and orchestration that have made this work a firm concert favourite for much of the last two centuries, and leads the APO as they play sections of the score to demonstrate what he has been talking about.

Then comes the true reveal: in the second half of the concert Abbott and the orchestra perform the symphony in full, so you hear the synthesis of the themes and earlier discussion by Abbott, and appreciate the music in it’s entirety (or unfinished entirety in this case).
