The Waiheke Community Art Gallery is delighted to announce the winner of the 2010 national furniture Design Award exhibition, Design-Make: Sun Lounger, is Hawkes Bay designer Chad Heays for his Sahara sun lounger.

The Design Award, sponsored by design denmark, Auckland, was judged in Denmark by the design team from one of Denmark’s leading Danish furniture brands, Skagerak Denmark.

The judges commented on the high standard of the New Zealand designs. “I’m truly impressed at the high level of both the design and craftsmanship,” says Anders Bundgaard, Director, Trip Trap Denmark .

”As a design item made for outdoor use it ( the Sahara sun lounger) has several important and valuable qualities. It has sculptural form giving the lounger a distinct expression and makes it at piece of furniture that’s both functional and holds high aesthetic value.”

”As a communicative item the lounger gives associations of dialog, unity, partnership and cosiness. Apart from being very sympathetic it embraces some significant values of “the good and unworried outdoor living”. The craftsmanship is distinct and use of the wood constructive qualities seems considered and professional,” says Anders Bundgaard.

The Design Make: Sun Lounger national furniture design award and exhibition is presented at the Waiheke Community Art Gallery and sponsored by design denmark, Auckland, in close collaboration with their principal supplier Skagerak Denmark.

This year eight designers from around New Zealand contribute new concepts for a Sun Lounger. The designers include the winner Chad Heays and also Marion Courtille, Andy Halewood, Roger Kelly, Edward Prince, Tom Kerr, Don Stodart and Paul Rhind.

This is the fourth Design Make national exhibition and award at the Waiheke Art Gallery, previous exhibitions have included Design Make: Seating; Design Make: Table and Design Make: Sideboard. “We are particularly excited by the creative entries in this year’s Design Award event,” says Waiheke Art Gallery Director, Linda Chalmers. “We are also delighted to have the entries judged internationally. It is really important for New Zealand designers to move into the international sphere.”

“Art and design cross boundaries and both fit the gallery exhibition portfolio. In New York, for example, art galleries regularly host exhibitions with a strong element of design,” says Chalmers.

Auckland-based design denmark imports Denmark’s premium brands representing the epitome of Danish design. Clean line and practical functionality form the basis of products across the range of indoor and outdoor furniture. “We saw an opportunity to assist in the recognition and development of New Zealand designers providing an opportunity to get their designs in front of an accomplished international design team. Skagerak Denmark has previously taken on board design developments from international designers, especially design award winners, so that potential is a possibility for a New Zealand designer,” says Bill Carrig. The winner of the award receives a prize of $2000 and a trophy.

“The thoroughness of several of the items (entries) are superior to many of the design ideas presented to us by experienced designers,” says Anders Bundgaard, Director, Trip Trap Denmark .
