"There is no place in normal New Zealand society for the man who is different", wrote Bill Pearson in his biting 1952 essay ‘Fretful Sleepers’.

His complaint was borne out of painful experience: despite being one of our most distinguished fiction writers and sharpest critics, his homosexuality forced on him a life of contradiction and secrecy.

In No Fretful Sleeper: A Life of Bill Pearson, Paul Millar has unwrapped the private layers and public contexts of Pearson’s life as a courageous non-conformist in 20th century New Zealand. Chair: Peter Wells.

Presented as a part of the Auckland Writers and Readers Festival.
