The book of the film: the possibilities and pitfalls of adaptation.

How does a book become a film and what is the relationship of the original text to a screen version? How can a film honour the original material and how can a writer relinquish their work?

Filmmaker Gaylene Preston talks to esteemed novelist Witi Ihimaera and producers John Barnett (Footrot Flats, Whale Rider, Sione’s Wedding) and Philippa Campbell (Rain, No. 2, Black Sheep) about turning books into films from both sides of the creative equation.

Presented as a part of the Auckland Writers and Readers Festival.
