Coinciding with New Zealand Music Month, the Canterbury Philharmonia’s first concert of 2010 on May 8 features Douglas Lilburn’s Symphony No. 1.

Completed in Christchurch in 1949, this landmark New Zealand work has a strong local connection, being inspired by views from the Port Hills across the Banks Peninsula craters.

New Zealand’s most internationally renowned composer of concert music, Lilburn was himself deeply influenced by two other composers whose works are linked to their own landscapes. Sibelius’s stirring ‘Finlandia’ and Vaughan William’s ‘Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus’ are also featured on the programme. The latter work, based on an old folk tune, has recently enjoyed increased international popularity as the favourite of British comedian Ricky Gervais.

The concert’s featured guest group is the Cantabile choir and featured soloist is 2010 National Concerto Competition finalist, Harry Ellerm. Playing Saint Saens’ breathtaking showpiece, ‘Introduction & Rondo Capriccioso’, the audience is sure to be captured by sheer virtuosity.
