DANZ interns whip up opportunities for emerging artists.

W.I.P '10 is set to kick off at Galatos in May with the support of MIC Toi Rerehiko and will run throughout the winter months of 2010. The DANZ interns are excited to present this opportunity for emerging choreographers and performers like themselves.

This initiative is designed to give emerging choreographers a chance to present ideas and works in progress to an audience within a friendly environment. The aim is to generate feedback and support for choreographers to aid the progression of their work.

The May performances will be on the 25th and 26th and will showcase some new ideas and known themes from fresh perspectives. The diverse lineup presenting consists of graduates from The New Zealand School of Dance, Unitec, and students of Auckland University Post Graduate Dance Programme. The elements explored in season one range from grief and dark secrets to psychological architecture of self; Choreography by Benny Ord, Amy Mauvan, Hannah Tasker- Poland, Zhara Killeen-Chance and Emily Campbell.

The DANZ interns of 2010 are graduates from the Unitec, Auckland University and AUT dance programmes. ''I am both excited and daunted by the prospect of having my work showcased alongside the amazing artists that have applied so far.''- Amy Mauvan 2010 DANZ intern and choreographer for WIP'10 Season One.

The interest from across the spectrum of New Zealand dance practitioners shows that there is an urgent need for an initiative such as W.I.P'10. The potential of this platform is limitless and could easily flourish into something that will notably benefit dance in New Zealand.

Each season will run out of Galatos over two nights:
Season one premiers May Tuesday 25th and will be followed by a forum facilitated by Raewyn Whyte

Subsequent seasons:
June Tuesday 29th, Wednesday 30th
July Tuesday 27th, Wednesday 28th
August Tuesday 24th, Wednesday 25th

Tickets are available at the door - $10 general admission $8 commission.

In an effort to learn the ins and outs of putting on a show the interns will be co-coordinating the production and behind the scenes element as well as choreographing and performing themselves.

As emerging choreographers the Interns appreciate and understand the benefit of a platform such as this and therefore are delighted to inform other emerging dance artists of this new opportunity.

WIP ‘10 – Works In Progress is a platform initiative set up by the DANZ interns and MIC Toi Rerehiko for emerging dance artists to present works in a supportive performance setting.

This platform initiative is an exciting prospect for all emerging choreographers. Having an opportunities such as this to present your work in progress before an audience within an environment such as Galatos could be extremely beneficial to the progression of your choreography.

"WIP will provide a much needed opportunity for emerging choreographers to find their feet and put on work in an encouraging environment outside of their training institutions"
