Devonport Theatre Company presents 'Pear Shaped', written and directed by Andy Saker.

“Gary’s not a dork, he’s a bloody nice guy!”

Pear Shaped is a bittersweet comedy, set on Auckland’s North Shore, written and directed by Andy Saker, founder of North Shore’s indie Devonport Theatre Company.

Pear Shaped, Saker’s debut as a playwright, tells the story of Gary Clam , an average, unambitious 30-something bloke who enjoys simple pleasures – gardening, fishing and having mates over for barbeques at his place by the beach in Takapuna. In many ways a typical if somewhat bland North Shore existence.

Gary is a nice guy, a bit naïve and hapless but loyal. He always sees the good in people, sometimes to his own detriment. Those who don’t know him might form the impression that he’s a bit of a dork but his mates Gav and Eddie don’t think so and neither does his fiercely protective Aunty Lynette.

Gary lost both parents in a comical freak hang-gliding accident but he’s coming right now after being a bit depressed. Inheriting his parents’ estate and beachside home certainly made life easier for him – so much so that he’s unconcernedly unemployed. A fact that has been irritating his long-term, live-in girlfriend Julie.

Julie feels she and Gary have grown apart. Sitting around at weekend barbeques listening to Gary and his mates debate the merits of squid bait versus pilchards ain’t doing it for her.
Her career has been going great guns. When her flashy boss the ex-pat Chris comes over from the Sydney office for a few days, Gary invites him to one of his famous barbeques and that’s when things begin to go Pear Shaped.

The play consists of a 9 member ensemble cast featuring new and emerging talent ranging from 20-40-something in age. Sound design is by eminent musician and producer Jed Town of Fetus Productions fame whose eerily beautiful 1983 track “What’s Going On?” features in this play.

Cast: James Crompton (Gary), Lorraine MacDonald (Julie), Vicky Cairns (Aunty Lynette), Matt Halliday (Chris), Pete Coates (Gavin), Amelia Guild (Karen), Katete Barda (Eddie), Sisi Ting Shao (Jennifer), Rob Owens (Giles)

Andy Saker makes a cameo appearance as ‘The Recycler’, a thinly disguised character based upon one of the North Shore’s most well-known residents.
