The Okareka Dance Company present Tama Ma.

A real life tale of love, life, joy and sorrow presented with insight and raw human drama by renowned dancers and choreographers Taiaroa Royal and Taane Mete.

Their autobiographical dance journey begins with birth in short dance film Pito and ends at the gates of heaven in the final act Whanaungatanga, a moving tribute to the dancers’ fathers. The transitions from boyhood to manhood include a drag queen’s metamorphosis from femininity to masculinity, and investigations of whanau and spirituality.

The vision and drive of Okareka Dance Company are its two main principals, Taiaroa Royal (Te Arawa, Kai Tahu, Ngati Raukawa) and Taane Mete (Ngati Kahungungu) and the choreography credits include master choreographers Douglas Wright and Michael Parmenter.

"We do not often see choreography that is so deeply drawn from a core of Maori culture and personal experience…This is profoundly important theatre.” Dominion Post

“Tama Ma is a sensational new dance work which is inspiring, simple and honest as well as a bit raunchy and clever.” National Business Review

Presented as a part of the ERUPT Lake Taupo Festival.
