September has been Pain Awareness Month. Pain Awareness Month NZ has held an awareness campaign in the form of an art competition. This Saturday night at Tabac, the winning artworks will be on display, along with a selection of pieces that will be part of a silent auction for charity.

There will be amazing performances throughout the evening:

- Music from Káren Hunter & Plum Green
- A real performance by The Dust Palace's Eve Gordon & Sarah Houbolt
- Puppet master Grae Burton with Beth St. Claire
- Callum Edwin Stembridge & Hannah Nix Gross
- & more.

All the acts will be in the theme of the competition, so expect intriguing things. The venue is wheelchair accessible, has wonderfully comfortable seating and will be serving both alcoholic & non alcoholic cocktails with nibbles throughout the night.

Everyone experiences pain at some point - a pounding headache at the end of a long day, a throbbing toothache warning of a cavity, a sprained ankle, a stinging burn. Pain is the body's natural alarm system, warning us that something isn't quite right. But imagine having that pain every single moment of every day!

The theme of the competition was “art inspired by pain”- using a creative way to show how pain can open your eyes, or your mind; how it can change the way we see the world. The artists were encouraged to be positive, not just stereotypically negative.

The campaign has been launched in New Zealand by photographer Hannah Nix Gross. Hannah herself has been dealing with the condition fibromyalgia for 12 years now. In her own words, “Simply ... it stinks!” She created this event to open a public conversation on the subject of chronic pain; the ups & downs that come with it, and how best to deal with it.

Come along and have some fun!
